The Minister of Marine has forwarded to Mr. T. A. H. Field, M.P., his reply to the request by the Nelson Chamber of Commerce for the extension of the Nelson river limits. He states that, having gone very carefully into the, matter, he regretted that he could not see his way to make any extension in the present limits. The Minister adds: "The certificates which masters and , engineers of vessels plying within extended river limits arc required to hold are. of a very low grade, and do not qualify their nolaers to have charge- of vessels plying outside partially smooth water, as would be the case if the the Nelson limits were made as asked for. Tho examination for a sea-going oil engineer's certificate for eea-going veasels, which is the certificate required by vessels trading between Nelson and Puponga, and having engines up to 60 h.p., is not a difficult one. and is such that, men who are fit t , ) be engineers of these vessels should be able to pass." sfr. Field forwarded the letter to Mr. C. R. Fell, president of the Nelson Chamber of Commerce. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP.
