Tito Koau, the latest addition to the fleot of coastal vessels of the Richardson Line, arrived at, Wellington on her maiden trip from Kaipora at 7 o'clock on Saturday. The vessel is not an auxiliary scow, as was generally supposed, but is an oilenginetl ship, similar to tho Kiritana, which belongs to the same She is propelled' by two screws driven by twin sets of oil engines. A separate oi! eugine on the dock drives the cargo winch, and the main engines are also utilised to drive t the dynamo for the ship's electric light.' The bridge is aft, in the same way as on tho Kiritona, and besides the usual devices, has a pneumatic whistle. Tho captain's quarters aro situated aft. The Koau is in appearance a trim little craft, and mil provo no doubt n, useful addition to tho fleet of the Richardson Line. Sho left Kaipar.a for Wellington on Tuesday last, but was delayed by bad weather from the outset. Conditions bocame so bad that, she was forced to heaveto off New Plymouth for tmo days, but the Koau behaved splendidly, and earned tho good opinion of all on board by her sca- , going capabilities. Oaptahi A. M'Nab, late of the Te Aroha, is in charge of the new vessel, with Mr. Blundell, late- of the Magic, as engineer. The Koau is berthed at the Taranaki Street Wharf, where she will discharge a cargo of 80,000 feet of timber. IIEiSS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. H. G. Isaac has succeeded Mr. F. O. Moratti as second engineer on one of the Union Company's steamers. Mr. H. Scott, chief steward of the Mapourika, has come ashore. Mr. K. Gunn, third engineer of the Mapourika, is about to join the Pateena as third engineer. The coastal steamer Huia is due tomorrow from Lyttelton. and is to sail.in the evening for Wanganui and New Plymouth. The Orepuki arrived yesterday morning from Timaru. She has 350 -tons of produce to put out here, and will sail tonight direct for Greymouth. From that port she will go to Lyttelton. After working Waipapapa Point, the Hinemoa arrived nt Bluff on Saturday evening. The steamer should leave to-day or to-morrow for Puysegur Point and Wert Coast, lighthouses^ Sailing masters are wondering if Taongi Island, lying between San 1 Franciscq and Samoa, has disappeared. According to the hydrographic office, a sailing schooner making the run between Ban Francisco and Pago Pago reported that it passed tho supposed, location in latitude 14dcg. 31min. north, longitude 169deg. lmin. caet, nnd that no sign of the island could be seen. The day was perfectly clear, observations had been taken in the morning and at noon, and a lookout was in the crow's nest during the entire day. Either the island was sunk or is wronglv charted It. is a place not often visited, and is known also as Smyth or Gaspar Rico Atoll The appeal of Wcnzyl Joseph Schiechka, master of the Northern S.S. Company's steamer Kotiti. against his conviction 'by Mr. E. C. Outten, S.M., on a charge of carrying more passengers on his vessel than the latter's survey certificate allowed, has been decided by Mr. Justice Cooper at the Supreme Court at Auckland. The appellant's vessel was used on Easter Monday last, to convey -excursionists between the s.s. Clansman and the whajf at Waiwera, tho Clansman having anchored as close as sho could to tho wharf (about two cables', length away). In doing bo she took aboard 253 instead of the legal number, 136. The ground of the appeal was that the Kotiti wa£ merely acting as a tender, and not." "plying" or "on any excursion." His Honour found that tho company's contract was to land the passengers a.t. Waiwero. and that tho company must have been aware that the Clansman could not. berth at tho Waiwera Wharf. The Kotiti. in tendering to tho Clansman, received the 263 passengers as passengers to Waiwera, and the master thus committed a. broach of the law. The appeal was dismissed, with £7 7s. costs. The Rotterdam correspondent of the shinping journal. "Fairplay," states that a. Bergen; steamship owner has equipped each of his vessels with a. ■ motor-boat and sufficient petrol for running 100 hours at a speed of fonr to five miles an hour. It i* expected that, this measure will prevent the sailors drifting about for davs after a vessel has been torpedoed arid before they can reach the nearest coast.

According: to "Eastern Commerce." the Nippon Yusei} FaisJia has decided, to add to its fleet.. This time the increase is demanded between Australia and Japan, the growing commercial relations between the two countries leading ■ to the decision to plnco two extra steamers on the run. They will be vessels of approximately 'Cno tons each. One will be withdrawn from anot.hor route, while the other has just bceii coraplel-ed. i News From "Rome .reports that Umherto Puglierc, n. naval engineer, has designed a new type' of linsinkable cargo boat, -which has hef-n accented by the Italian Ministry 'of Marine. The "It-ovista, Maritima" says the vessel has a displacement of 10,300 tons and can carry 5800 tons of cargo. It has a. double skin, the Bpace between the inner and outer hulls being filled with coal and other material to protect tho ship from mine or torpedo. ■ .
