ALIEN ENEMIES IN AUSTRALIA
II" was announced, by the Prime Minister, Mr. Hughes, last week, that tbero are at present interned in Australia 3600 alien enemies. Immediately after the outbreak of the war, said Mr. Hughes, the Government took steps to prover'c the departure of alien enemies from Australia. The dc-fenco authorities at, once commenced to place in internment camps those persons who wtfre known to bo members of, or liablo for, seryico the forces of the enemy countries. This policy - has been extended to alien enemies, who are not members of the forces of tho eDerny, and it is believed that all alien enemies whose conduct^ has been unsatisfactory are .interned. Tho number of alien enemies resident m Australia at tho .outbreak of the war, who, are iiow ihtorncd,- exceeds 2600. Alien enemies found on enemy ships .seized as prizes, or on British or_ neutral ships arriving here, were also interned. . , "number of these- now interned is about 100 °- ■ Un The following restrictions have been placed on alien enemies who were left at libertv:-(a) They arc required to give parole not to ,take any hostile action; (b) lliey are required to report to the polico weekly, or. at such pt-rux.la as rn'av be fixed; (c) they are forbidocu. unless'they obtain spccial/permission, to be in possession of arms, ammunition, or explosives, cameras, codes, or ciphers, naval or military handbooks oi ma-ps, inflammable liciuids, carrier pigeons, motor vehicles, signalling apparatus telephones, motor boats or yachts; (a) Uicj are forbidden lo enter wharfs, docks, or ships; (e) they aro-forbidden to change their names without the permission of I 1"" Minister of Defence; (f) they are forbidden to leave tho Commonwealth without obtaining permission of the military authorities.
