WELLINGTON SOUTH V. NGAIO. ' > /The first of this season's home-and- , home matches between the above clubs was played at Ngaio on Saturday, and , ended, after some exciting play, in a tie. The visitors on arrival at Ngaio wore escorted to the club room, where, a cordial welcome was extended by Mr. A. B. Topp (president), who expressed the hope that the Ngaio representatives would make a better showing than on previous occasions, and that the vistiors would, for a change, return with, only their own colours. (Applause.) In view of Wellington South's handsome victories in the past this appeared to bo a ease of "aiming high" but the result showed that the task whioh Mr. Topp asked his team to perform was not unattainable, i'lay commenced at 7 p.m., and Wellington South started strongly, Messrs. Berry and Thompson scoring'shortly after .8 p.m. Half an hour later Messrs. Tucker, and E. E. Hiclts scored for Ngaio. equalising, the tallies. Wins followed for Messrs. Welton, Harper, and Thomas, the score being 5—2 in favour of the visitors at the adjournment for refreshments. Ngaio' subsequently made a Fine late run, wins by Messrs. Wild, Prince, and Lindsay making the tally five ail. The games at boards 1 anji 9 were incomplete when play ceased,VO>uit awards in Iheso cases wero readily agreed to, each sido getting one more win. An exciting and .hardfought contest thus ended in a tie. In returning thanks for the hospitality extended to his team, Mr.. Armstrong, the South Wellington president, made it cloar that the Newtownites, although "retutrning with only ono flag," had epent a thoroughly enjoyable ' evening, and were already looking forward to tho return match to bo played at Newtown later in the season. (Applause.) During the evening the question of reviving the fixture Combined Wellington Chess Club was discussed, the idea, being very favourably received. ■ The full score of Saturday's match is as follows:—
