KILLED IN ACTION
BRIG.-GENERAL F. E. JOHNSTON, G.B. SHOT BY A SNIPER News was received yesterday of the death at the front of Brigadier-General Johnston, C.8., Commander of the Ist NewZealand Infantry Brigade in France. Tlio cablo to the Defence Department stated that Brigadier-General Johnston had been killed 'hy a sniper's bullet while inspecting the front-line trenches. The news was received on all sides with deep regret, for the. late, Brigadier-General Johnston, recognised 'as a most efficient and gallant officer, had a winning personality, and was esteemed by all lanks in his command, and indeed by all who knew him. Fol'owing the death of Bri-gadier-General Brown so closely, it will bo realised that those of Hie higher command in the New Zealand Force are suffering severely as the rebuilt of the danger they share with the men, who are doing so much to Teflect credit on our arms.
