THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS pY GLEXCOE.I By the death of Mr. G. P. Donnelly the sport of rating has lost a firm friend. 'Ino deceased gentleman bred and owned many good horses, including Mangnliono and Awahuri, two Xational Steeplechase winners. He was not successful in winning a National Hurdles, though he owned tho favourite in 1905. This was v thc grey niaro Trumpery, who fell at tho mile-post ami broke her back. Mr. Donnelly imported tho two well-known sires Gold Beef and Demosthenes, each of whom left many winners. Tho deceased was for many years a prominent member of tho Hawke 8 Bay Jockey Club and on several occasions he filled the office of president. The Porirua team for the National mectr ing will go south to-night. B. Hatch will rido tho fiat hor6e and H. Burt will be up on Taufra. At Eiccarton on Tuesday tho Winter Oup fancy Parisian Diamond gave Fiery Gtobs and Zuland a start and a bad beating over six furlongs. The full-brother to Sauci is now at a short price for the mile event, and he is not likely to be deposed from liis position. St. Elmn was sohoolcd over hurdles at Eiccarton on Tuesday, which suggests that tho St. Ambrose gelding will be a runner in tho National Hurdles, and not in tho Steeplechase. He was runner up to Gladful in the Great Northern Hurdles, and this form should ensuro him getting plenty of support at Eiccarton. The Hastings horseman, L. Wilson, will go south to-night to fulfil riding engagements at the coming Eiccarton meeting. A. J. M'Flinn has been engaged to ride Sir Agnes in the Winter Cup.' Two Now Zealand horses which arrived in 6ydnov a week or so ago were produced at Canterbury Park on July 28, but fudging from the tone of the betting market, neither was much fancied. One was Good Day (Boniform—Sunlight), which started in the Maiden Handicap, and was lucky enough to escape tho accident in that race, and the other was the imported flllv Fother'ingay (Enrln. Hot—Fortharta), which started in Trial Stakes. Good Day is owned by Mr. W. G. Stead, and Fotheringav is the properly of Mr. G. Palmer. It is said the Auckland Eating Olub will find it necessary this week to refuse _at least two or three applications for riding licenses from horsemen -who held the privilege to ride as late as lost week. Beports from Auckland mention that Fisher wrenched himself when doing a gallop at Ellerslio one morning last wcelf. This- decided his owner not to undertake the proposed trip to Eiccarton. Eligible, which was being hacked about on his owner's station preparatory to going into active commission, ricked his leg again through getting into a bit of soft turf, and will be one of the hospital contingent for some time. After b'-'ing oif the tracks for four sous the !<ant Ilario gelding St. Kevin has been put into work again a.t Wingatui by 0. Christie.
