THE VIOLET
To the ladies and gentlemen and residents of Wellington and other parts of the Dominion of New Zealand.—Greatings to all. This is to make known that I am a cultivator of that beautiful plant tho violet, at Otaki. One of the beauties of its pretty ilower is that it blooms for eix months during tho year. It is indeed pood to look upon, and has an exceptionally pleasing odour. It is a fact if some of these flowers aro left in a sitting-room, so attractive are they that, the majority of visitors, when first entering there, seem irresistibly drawn to immediately admire the lovely violets, 110 matter how beautifully that pajtimlai' room may be otherwise furnnTlied. Violets come first.
Another thing. -As a rule, fever and other disorders will not enter where «i bouquet of these pretty (lowers are kept; one reason being the odour; besides, it is a sign of order, good taste, and cleanliness. Tho beauty of the violet is like the attraction of a pretty maid to her lover, and she, like tho violet, brightens her father's home by her presence, and gladdens tho heart of her fiance, as does this beautiful flower gladden our hearts when we see it growing. The violet not only rejoices the hearts of young men and maidens who wear this flower near their hearts; it suggests refinement, and is soothing to the feelings, and also to thoso in fho evening of life it brings sweet solace and comfort. It does not seem presumptuous to say that even in a better land tho soul of man rejoices in the remembrance of the beautiful violets left in this earthly home. The violet will assist in memory of our children and dear ones who have gone to the war; also the wounded and out fighting men leaving home and hastening off to the irar. Tho violets help to remind us, by their presence for half tho year, of those absent at war; during the other , half year, when yiolcts bloom not, we must bear in longing and sadness without: the consolation of its fragrance.—From your friend, P. E, SKIPWITH. Otaki.
