GENERAL GODLEY
Sir,—l notice that in the New Zealand Parliament one member spoke of requesting the British authorities to remove General Godley from the command of the New Zealandcrs in, Franco. LieutenantGeneral Sir A. .T. Godley at present commands an army corps, which consists of theee divisions, tho. New Zealand being one. At least one if not both the others are Australian divisions. I think that the only move that General Godley is likely to get is one upwards. Up to the present his record is one of the best of the corps commanders on the Western front. Tho great attack at Anzac in August, 1915, was under his control, though the .whole Anzac command was General Birdwood's, and the plan of that attack must have taken very careful forethought and preparation. Also tho attack that carried Messincs on .Tune 6 was apparently by his corps, and from what I can gather from tho reports by mail, tho success of this corps was responsible for the victory. A. glance at the map will show that as soon as Mcssines was taken. Wytschaatc was clearly untenable for the Germans, and it was significant, that it was at Mcssines that the Germans delivered their counter-attack. Well, tho splendid success of this attack reflected great credit not only on the men, but also on tho high command who planned the attack.' In this case tho high command was General Godley and his staff. Personally, .1 do not think that the Imperial authorities are likely to move a general while he carries*-out attacks like that at Slessines.—l ain,"%tc'., BYSTANDER. Taranaki.
