I' was interested in turning over some old "Dramatic Notes," written, I fancy, by Austin Breton, to come across . a critique of the first performance any.wlioro of Comvns Carr's/ powerful drama "Called Back," that was played so successfully here many years ago by the lato George Rignoldi In that performance, given at the Prince's Theatre, London, on April 20, 18S4, the late lamented Sir Herbert Tree played the part of Paola Macari, and the notice says:— "The best performance was that of Mr. H. Beerbohm Tree, who "gave .a singularly unexaggerated impersonation of the suave scoundrel Paola Macari. He depicted the character with very remarkable skill, and both in acting and .appearance realised to the life a character which is at once difficult and dangerous to assume." In thc_same cast Kyrle Bellew figured as Gilbert Vaughan, and' G. W. Anson (afterwards with the Broughs in Australia) was Dr. Ccneri.
