Further particulars received from Samoa in connection with the burning vessel at sea shows that the derelict when sighted was in latitude ldeg. 50miu. J?., longitude 15deg. llmin. W. The captain of. a schooner which has reached Samoa states that the discovery was made at 4 o'clock in the morning, when the look-out's attcn'tion was attracted by a light about 20 miles away. The schooner's course was thereupon altered with a view to investigation, and at daybreak the burning object was reached, and found to be a threemasted vessel of about 600 burthen. The wreck was in flames from end to end, beins burned down nearly to the water's edge. There was uo sign of life about, and the ship's name could not be discerned, nor was there anything to show what ,had become of the crew. The shiii had been burning probably for three or four days, and was drifting two miles an hour in a westerly direction. The weather was calm and clear at the time, and the Uis-i-nco of tl'" neowl land anpro-Mimu-ly 550 miles. The captain believes that the vessel was probably the one which left San Francisco, and was bound for Australia with a cargo of kerosene. The "Kawhia' Settler" reports that the oil launch Marokopa had a rough experience when entering the Marokopa River on Wednesday. A heavy sea was running, and the vessel delayed negotiating the bar for some time until a temporary quiet invited an attempt. Two large seas struck the little craft, however, completely enveloping her for a time, but she shook herself free and reached calm water safely. Everything had been battened down for the venture—including the engine-room —and, on removing the "hatches -those on board fpund that the engineer (Mr. J. Startup) was lying unconscious on the floor, suffocated with the fumes. He was quickly brought into frosh air. nnd soon recovered, but his experience is described as a "near thing."
