FOR SICK AND WOUNDED SOLDIERS. Violet Day simply as Violet Day should be a huge success, but when the object of the day is to raise funds for the Red Cross, which means, of course, our sick and wounded soldiers, ■ the response to the appeal to be niado on Friday, August 10, is practically guaranteed. Most extensive preparations are being made by the organisers. Throughout New Zealand promises have been received of donations of flowers, of which violets will predominate, and steamers and trains are carrying them freo of freight to Wellington in time to he sold on Friday. Tho secretary, however, would like it to be emphasised that all flowers should be sent in time to reach Wellington no later -than Thursday evening next, August 9. In addition to the sale of flowers there will be all sorts of novelties, and an auction sale of the yeij latest oreations in the way of millinery, held by Mr. Baa-ry Lupino, of the "Very Good Eddie" Comedy Company, should prove to be<orie of the star items of the day. Tho following firms are contributing a hat each:—Mrs. Matliewson, Miss Abraham, Messrs. Kirkcaldie and Stains, the Economic, the D.1.C., and Te Aro House. Members of tho "Very Good Eddy" Company have, with the consent of Messrs- J. and N. Tait, all promised to assist in every possible The .commercial travellers are also bestirring themselves, and are organising 6treet entertainments, which promise to bo both attractive and novel, and the Maori troupe of poi dancers, which. Mrs. Elder, of Waikanae, is arranging, will be another interesting feature of tho day's programme of events. Altogether no stone is being left unturned by the organisers of Violet Day to raise as largo a sum as possible for the needs of our sick and wounded soldiers on theother side of the world, needs which this recent terrible fighting will have made all the nioro imperative. Tlio smallest contributions of flowers and eggs will be welcomed, and they can b& sent to Messrs. Harcourt and Co.'s rooms.
