THE ATTACK ON THE AMERICAN CONVOY Washington, August 2. The Admiral of the convoy fleet gives a detailed report of the encounter between the Americans and the U-boate. It 6hows that the submarines attacked twice, aud.possibly one was destroyed.— Aiis.-N.Z. Cable Assn. CAPTURED NORWEGIAN USED AS MOTHER SHIP U-BOATS IN MID-ATLANTIC. (Ecc. August 3, 7.10 p.m.) Copenhagen, August 2. The crew of the Norwegian steamer Benguela, which was sunk by a submarine early in July, state that the vessel sailed from Bristol on Juue 7 for Philadelphia. They were stopped, on Juno 15 in mid-Atlantic by a big German submarine, which placed a prize crew on' board and compelled tho Lenguela to act as her mother ship for a. fortnight, while the submarino made several long cruises, returning on ono occasion with a captured Spanish ship. Eventually the creV of the Benguela were landed at Cadiz. It is believed that the Benguela. is still aciiug as a mother ship for German submarines. The Norwegian steamers Glydenfris and Hildur have been, sunk b*y a submarine in Spanish waters. The crews were rescued.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
