A WEST.COAST MINER. Samuel Frickleton, the JXew/ealatder who has just been awarded the Victoria Cross, is a West Coast miner, his last New Zealand address be-, ing .Blackball. Hβ Bailed s \fith the sth R-eiaforcements and returned to New Zealand in September, 1915 i He was discharged in November 11, 1915,' but re-enlisted on April i, ■ 1916, and . sailed again, with the 15th Reinforcements. He was wounded at the Battle of Messines. Latest advices are that he 'had. been promoted to the rank of ••corporal. ... : Sir James Allen has uispatched the following telegram to Mrs. E. L. frickleton, mother of New Zealand's latest Victoria Cross hero:— '"Although I have not vet received official confirmation of the message appearing in this morning's paper, I have fiftle-doubt that the : Lance-Corporal Samuel Frickleton who has been awarded the coveted Victoria Cross' is your ■son.'.and. I am sure'you must have vend. with a thrill of pride the story of the rallant .deed which won for him and for New Zealand-this very high honour. In tendering to you. my warmest congratulations I do- not forget that you have given four other sons in the service of King and Empire, one of whom has fallen in the cause, and another is at present severely wounded. I sincerely trust that both of your wounded sons will have a speedy recovery,- and- that they and their brother still, on active service may all be safely restored to you in due course, having nobly dono their duty."
