VALUABLE DIAMOND DISAPPEARS
The mysterious disappearance of a valuable 'diamond from tho premises of Messrs. Proud's, Ltd., at No. 187 Pitt Street, Sydney, was reported to the police on July 20. Mr.W.J..Proud, principal of the firm, stated that the diamond, which was valued at Ji7so, weighed 1-11 carats, and .was widely known as .the "Star of Sydney." It was one .of the largest, if not the largest, /in Australia, skilfully cut in modern style,, and was of exceptional It was set in platinum as n necklace, with loop, attachment and chain.
The gem was in the possession of the linn on the Saturday, and was not missed, till Monday morning, when the safes were opened. A. search was made, but all efforts to trace the missing stone proved fruitless. It is probable that the stone disappeared just before 1 o'clock on Saturday, when there was the usual rush of purchasers in tho shop. As far as could be ascertained, it was not on the counter being shown to any customer about that time, but it may havo been left there a minute or ; two before the tray on which it was was placed in the safe, during which timo an expert thief could havo secured it.
