WOOTTON DISABLED. The low pressure cqnneeting-rod of the coastal steamer Wootton broke at 4.50 p.m. yesterday, when the vessel had reached the Heads outward bound to Puponga and Lyttelton. Captain Larsen signalled to Beacon Hill signal steamer, and the tug Karaka went to the assistance of the steamer, which was takeu in tow at about 8 p.m. An hour later the \Wootton was berthed at-No. 13 (north) Queen's Wharf. Repairs will be carried out by Messrs. J. .). .Niven and Co., and it is hoped to have the vessel ready for sea by Saturday. TAINUI FOR LIGHTHOUSE WORK. According to a Gazetto notice, the Tokomaru Harbour Hoard intends to erect beacons to mark the best anchorage in Tokomtiru Bay. The lights are to be shown on and after September 1. Advices by the last mail report the chartering of three .Norwegian steamers at new high rates for vessels out tf the i J aciiic Coast to foreign ports. One of the vessels has .just beeu launched, and has beeu taken over by Mitsui and Co. for three voyages, which will occupy about sis montns. Another foreign bottom has been taken for foreign stervice for six or seven months at 105,000d01. monthly. ' The Wellington agency for the auxiliary schooner 1 Houto. has been accepted by Messrs. Dalgety and Co. The Houto is owned by the Iron and Steel Company o; New Zealand, whose headquarters are at Duncdin. Well known as a good sailer the Houto has rccontly been fitted with.Scandia engines burning crude oil. It is understood that the vessel will trade between Aueklaud, Wellington, and Duuediu. The harbour ferry steamer Duchess is to resume her -running on Priday, after minor repair* to ber boiler. ' . During the month of July the total tonnage that arrived at and departed from Wellington was 169,272. for the month of July, 1916, the tonnage was 254,232, there being, therefore a decrease this year of 84,960 tons. ' • It is of interest to note that the revival of wooden shipbuilding is not peculiar to the United States. In France it is proposed that the timber of the south be used for large vessels or 6000 tons with Steel reinforcing.. This type of vessel v.as common in France a few decades ago. In Norway and other Scandinavian-coin-tries an unusually large number of vcodeu vessels are being built. For six months ended .Tune .)0, 1917, 1.723,666 tons of coal, valued at £1,212,826, were exported from' Newcastle. The figures for the June half-year, 1916, were 1,580,bti tons, valued at £850,071. Notwithstanding the. war, the /lumber of vessels which entered Japanese ports durine last year was far greater than 1915. According to the official returns, 9062 vessels with a total tonnage of 20,363,518 entered the ports lost year, an increase or 888 vessels over the. previous year. The number of vessels which left.
