POLICE AND MAINTENANCE CASES. At the Magistrate's Couvt yesterday, 3D - . S. E. Jl'Carthy, S.M., was <m tlio Bench. For -wilfully committing a grossly indecent act in Marion Street, Ellen Hawthorne wns sentenced to a. yo&r's imprisonment. Joseph Dossonbach and Frederick A. 0. Kiugan, convicted of' drunkenness, were oach lined 405.. in default seven (lays' imprisonment; Michael Coleusoii was fined aOs., with tho option of seven days' imprisonment; and Peter ITOarron, against whom there were several previous convictions, was sentenced to twenty days' imprisonment. James Hands, a soldier, who was convicted of drunkonness, was ordered to he handed over to the military authorities, and John S. Priest was fined 205., in i"efault 48 hours' imprisonment. Four first offenders were dealt with in the usual lenient manner. MAINTENANCE OASES. . Maintenance cases -were dealt with os 'follow:—Thomas 0. Devery, whose arrears amounted to 12s. 6d., was sentenced to & month's imprisonment, the- -warrant not to be issued until applied lor by complainant; Charles Edward King, whoso arrears amounted to £2 10s., was similarly dealt with; John Skipper, whose arrears totalled £19 155., waa sentenced to three months'' imprisonment, warrant not to be issued until applied for by complainant; William Slattory paid into Court the amount of his arrears, £6, but counsel for complainant asked that the man should be punished in some way, for, although well ablo to pay the amount of the 7iiaintenanofl, ho invariably waited until a summons Tpae issued before paying, thereby causing the complainant unnecessary expense, fllattery was fined £2 and costs, in default fourteen days' imprisonment. John William Blair and Stanley Griffiths were each ordered to pay ss. per week maintenance, and the maintenance, older mado against John Galbra'th was cancelled, as he was unable- to work, and his mind was unbalanced. Mr. 7. TV. Jackson made application for the rehearing of a case agjiinst a juvenile who was committed to on industrial homeon tho ground that ha was not under control.
