REMUNERATION OF PUBLIC SERVANTS
Sir,—Having been some weeks at sea with sufficient time to ruminato on things in general, aud particularly ' regarding affairs in New Zealand, I am more thanever impressed by the fact that the Public Servants of Now Zealand are very much underpaid. I had previously collected data which goes to prove that tho average public servant receives less remuneration -than labourers and others.
Considering the training that they have to undergo, tho examinations they havo to pass, and the responsible nature of their work, I submit that tho present grading system be overhauled. 'L'his is particularly urgent, in my opinion, especially in view of tho high cost of living. Many Public Servants will meet our death on the battlefield, but for the sake of -thoso who remain to carry ou the public work of Now Zealand I venture to ask all who aro able to do as much as they can in the direction indicated. I trust, sir, that I can count on your help in this respect. I might mention -that tho present grading has driven more than ono very promising man from the service to obtain better remuneration elsewhere for his services.—l am, etc., CYMA. At sea. H.M.N.Z. Troopship No. —. May 20, 1917.
