BRITISH DRIFTERS ATTACKED
BY AUSTRIAN CRUISERS

HEAVY ODDS

t London, July 26. ■Tho Press Bureau reports:—Three Austrian cruisers on May 15 attacked fortyeight British drifters wulching tho antisubmarine nets in the Otranto Straits. lhe drifters carried crews of ten and ;i s ? UJ! - Ono Austrian cruiser showed chivalry by blowing blasts on her siren nnd (lipping her Hag, indicating that tho drifters must be abandoned. J ho cruiser approached within ore bundled yards of one of tho cruisers, hailed her, and ordered tho crew to take to tlie boate. The skipper ordered full speed, and called on tho crew to givo three cheers. They manned the gun, firing until a shell from uto Cruiser disabled tho gun. In tho meantime tho cruiser had passed out of range. The other drifters showed a spirit of indomitable gallantry. Three of the drifters were not abandoned until they foundered. Tho crows of tho othors refused .to abandon the vessels, although their guns wero outranged and they were suffering from broadsides brought upon them. Throughout the. action tlio wireless operators were conspicuous for their bravery in remaining at their posts.—Au6.-N.Z. Cablo Assn.-Keuter.
