Molesworth j Street.On a second charge of. using obI sceno language ho was convicted and disi charged. A remand to Wednesday was granted in ! tho case of William Scholes, charged with forging a chcquo for £2 12s. and uttering same. For insobriety John Wynn was sentenced to a month's imprisonment. Two first offenders wero fined 10s. cacli, in default twenty-foul - hours' imprisonment. Joseph Stanley, for committing a breach- of his prohibition order, was' fined 40s. aiid' costs, in default fourteen days', imprisonment. ■ RAGGING IN' THE RAILWAY. Three youths, named Denis John O'Connor, Victor George Riley, and James Thomas Walker, employed as- cloaners by the Railway Department, and stationed at Paekakariki. were chargcd. with assaulting Arthur Nolan Stewart, another cleaner. According, to tho evidence tho accused were _ annoyed with Stewart because of certain acts of his, and by way of reprisal they entered his hut at an early hour lh the morning and threw a bucket of water over liim while he was lying in bed. Mr. P. W.-Jackson appeared for tho defendants, and.-stated that, the assault was "a; trivial affair and a characteristic boyish prank. He. urged that a conviction would militate against the boys in the Service,. and suggested' a dismissal of the charge. The Magistrate, however, recorded a conviction, and fined;each of tho defendants 10s; and costs. BY-LAW OASES; -Alexander Samuel M'Clure, for feeding a ■horse in a public street otherwise than by means of a : nosebag, was fined ss. and costs, in default seven days' ment.For allowing offensive matter to accumulate on iiis premises in Moxliam Avenue, Kilbirnie, a Chinaman named Nang Chang, who had previously been before the Court, waß fined £5 and " costs, in default one month's imprisonment. The Magistrate warned defendant that if he came before the.Court again on a similar charge lie Would be fined £10, and the fines would be increased on every 'subsequent appearance. Eddio May was fined 70s. and costs for allowing stock to ciiiluer. ILL-TREATING HORSES. ; C. W. BaylisS was charged with cruelly ill-treating a pair of horses by causing them to work while in an unfit condition. The defendant , was-engaged in carting a heavy load of brewers' grains towards Wadestown. Inspector Henry, of tile Society for. the Prevention of. Cruelty to Animals, who was in the neighbourhood, examined the horses. On the leading horse he found a sore on tho near' shoulder under tho collar, and a sore on the offside under the saddle of the horse in the shafts. The sores on both were raw and bloody, and tho animals wero not in a condition to be worked. Defendant was convicted and fined £5 and costs, in default one month's imprisonment. A. Peters was also charged with cruelly ill-treating- a horse. He pleaded not guilty and after hearing some of the evidence the case was adjourned for a week for the production of further cvidenoc. MOTORISTS IN COURT. Robert Hall was fined 20s. and costs for having insufficient light on hie motor-car. A plea of not guilty was entered by Arthur Horner, for whom Mr. E. M. Beechey appeared, on a charge of driving his motor-car in Clyde Quay in a manner 'daugerous to the public. The prosecution arose out of a collision that occurred in the neighbourhood, which was' witnessed by two police officers, who maintained that the excessive speed at which defendant was driving his car wns responsible for the collision, Mr. ,T. O'SJica, City Solicitor, prosecuted. After hearing the evidence, the Magistrate convicted.and fined the defendant £2 and costs., '. CLAIM FOR . DAMAGES. A civil-action brought by H,- M. Trotman, insurance agent, : for whom Mr. T. Ncavo appealed, against -Howison land Sons, motor-car proprietors, was heard by Mr. W. 0. Iliddell. S.M. The plaintiff claimed from tho defendants the sum of £75 in respect of a collision which took place near Laiulitou Railway Station on June 5 between the cars of tho respective parties. Mr. H. P. O'Leary appeared for the defendants. Numerous witnesses were called. The case was partly heard aud adjourned for a week. j
