STATE-SUBSIDISED LOAF

BRITISH FOOD MINISTRY'S POLICY. (Rec. July 26, 8.15 p.m.) London, July 25. In the House of Commons, Mr. Clyne, Secretary to the Ministry of Pood, in outlining the Ministry's policy, stated that steps were being taken to protect industrial workers not only in war but in peace. All the flour mills had .been taken over, and the flour would be sold to the bakers at a uniform price, enabling the latter to sell the quartern loaf at a maximum price of 9d. If the purchase price did not equal the Bale price the Exchequer would t'efray the difference. The "Daily Chronicle" says that it is estimated that tho subsidising of the loaf by the State may cost the Treasury fifteen million sterling per annum.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
