CHEESE PURCHASE
CANADIAN PRICE THE BASIS. A deputation of cheose producers wait*' cd on the Prime Minister yesterday for tho purpose of conferring ivith him regarding the price to Iμ paid ]>y the Imperial Government for the cheese output, of the Dominion. Mr. Massey ig negotiating on behalf of the Board of Trade on the one hand and tho New Zealand producers on the other hand, to makean arrangement that will lw fair and : acceptable both to the farmers and the British authorities. The producers contend that they should receive the 6ame amount for their cheeso an was paid for Canadian cheese, less the difference in tho freight charges between Britain and Canada ({A. a lb.), and Britain anil Now Zealand (?d. a lb.). As far as can at present be ascertained" it seems that the British Government is iwying lljd. a lb. for Canadian cheese but-this figure includes id. a lb. paid as commission, the amount actually received by the farmers being 103 d. a lb. Some members of the deputation thought that the commission paid in Canada ought not to be taken into account is fixin? the price, and tuat tne> price paid to'the New Zealand farmer should.be Hid., less the difference in freights. It is reported, however, .that the deputation discussed the problem in. a very reasonable spirit, and it shouUL not bo difficult to reach an agreement satisfactory to both parties. If the price fixed is to bo the amount actually received by the Canadian producer, less the difference in freight, the New Zealand farmer will get IOJd. a lb. Tho price paid for last season s output was 9W. It is anticipated that the price this year will bo at least 10d. clear.
