FREEZING STOCK ■RESTRICTION OF KILLING SUGGESTED: Dr. Thicker (Christehurch East) asked tho Minister of Agriculture if ( he had considered the advisability of stopping tho killing of owe lambs and ewe sheep generally; and -whether ho would stop tho indiscriminate killing, for freezing purposes of young eal tie—calves, yearlings, and heifers? "Anything -with meat on it has been rushed into tho freezers and cool store*,". said Dr. Thaeker. "The Minister admits the bulk of carcasses in cool storage is owe and lamb meat; depletion of stock in this manner may raiso a national crisis. South Island stock returns show a 'great shortage of sheep." ' "Tho whole matter of'dealing with next reason's production of freezing 6tock is at present receiving very careful consideration, having regard to tho amount of refrigerated siorago a.vailnble, and the shipping outlook," t-aid the Hon. W. D. S. JlacDonald in reply. "The question of the slaughtering ofewes arid ewe lambs is among- tho matters receiving; consideration in this connection, but nny proposals as to drastic a/id arbitrary restrictions must be handled with caution. Last year's final eheop returns showed an increase of 208,912 breeding ewes, 1 as compared with tho preceding year. Only tho interim sheop returns for this year ha.vo yet been published, but.it is expected that tho final returns will show a further increase, in the number of breeding ew4«, and a substantial increase in tho total' number of sheep in the Dominion, as compared with last year."
