COLONIAL AND OTHER PHOMJCK Auatralia'j-New Zealand Cable Association. London, July 20. The market for wheat, oats, peas, and beans is inactive. Prices are unchanged. Flour is quiet, owing- to the increasing supplies of potatoes, whereof there is an excellent crop. It is therefore assumed that this will lead to a lessening demand for bread, and is likely to cause a considerable reduction in the consumption, especially as general dissatisfaction is expressed at the quality now being supplied. Australian flour is 786.; patents, 81s. (Hec. July 22, 5.15 p.m.) London, July 21. Frozen Meats—Prices unchanged. There i'' no business in rabbits. IiUTTEE MARKET VERY FJItM. London, July "0. The butter market is very firm, although prices arc nominally unchanged pending a rise in tho official maxima prices tomorrow. Supplies are short, nil colonial lines being cleared, but there are several cargoes arriving. The trade, it is understood, has suggested to the Food Controller that he should release 100,000 boxes which have been commandeered, and thus prevent any undue increase in the vrices. Many of the importers approve this proposal, which would overtake Australia's output season. Tho difficulty in securing tonnage would be thus avoided. (P,ec. July 22, 5.15 p.m.) . . London, July 21. The .maximum butter prices have been fixed as follow:—Australian, salted, 1985.: uusalted, .2015.; New Zealand, salted, 2005.; unsalted, 2035. There have 'been complaints about short weight in the New Zealand cheese released by the Government, due to being overkept in unsuitable storage. The Government allows 3i per cont. shrinkage off marked weights, but the shortage is frequently 7 per cent., making it. impossible to retail it probably at 16d—Ans.-N.Z. Cable Assn. LEAD. (Ree. (Messrs. •Mellsop, Eliott and Co., Palmerston North, local agents) report on the frozen meat, market, under date London, May 4, as follows:— There was a uet decrease in (lie total supplies in Suiithlicld as compared with the corresponding week last vc'ar. of 729 tons meat, New Zealand and Australian being 1280 tons behind, but South Aiu'erican 678 tons in advance. Prices have, advanced considerably, and although the rates for South American lambs and sheep in carcasses have been lowered by agreement to 11 and 10 respectively, the importers, by catting the carcasses up, in the majority of cases arc realising considerably higher prices than they agreed to make. novcriiment-controlled meat remains at Idle rates, but. the Quantify is inadequate for the trade.
