SUNK BY AMERICAN ARMED LINER

A German submarine is believed to have been sunk by an. armed American steamer in a running fight lasting ait hour and a half, in which thirty-five shots were fired by tSe submarine and. twenty-five by the steamer. The guns of the steainur were manned by »n , American naval crew. The submarine ivas first seen at about 7000 yards. She had a six-inch gun. forward and another aft. She flow ro flag. "Opon sight of the submarine the steamer ho'isted the American Dag and waited for about ten minutes. As the submarine approached the steamer fired. The submarine responded. The steamer kept a speed that would permit the submarine within range. Then followed a fight lasting for an. hour and a half. The submarine came to a disunite of about 2300 yards. By that time tne submarine had -.fired thirty-five shots and the steamer twfinty-five. The last shot of the steamer apparently struck the submarine, whioh raised clear nut of the water and stood stern end up Tor a few seconds. Then she disappeared. "The .captain of the steamer and the commander of the guard Tjelievos that T",e submarine was sunk. The steamer suffered no damage."/
