MIRAMAR BOROUGH COUNCIL

Tho fortnightly meeting of the Miramar Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor (Mr. E Townsend) presided and there were also present: Councillors Underwood, Hawthorne, Pollock, raid Hobertshaw. A letter was received from the Education Board regarding the water sup. ply t<? tlie Worser Bay School. Tho letter pointed out that tho Wellington. City Council allowed a substantial reduction, and in view of tho fact that the service was used by public school children it was hoped that tho council would | make a reduction. It was decided by the council that the reduction asked for could not bo granted. Mr. W. C. JrGregor asked for permission to remove his fenco back twenty feet on to the land between his section and Rongatai Terrace. This was granted provided the applicant plants the enclosure. The matter of the insurance on tho council's motor bus was again brought up, and a motion to liavo the bus insured was defeated. The matter will again bo brought, up at tho next meeting of tho council, The borough engineer reported oil tho water question. He stated that on Monday morning last the borough reservoir was practically emptynnd tho normal supply did not resume until after 11 a.m. This was duo to the Gas Company's works using four times the usual amount without giving any notice; From inquiries made lo the manager at tho works it appeared that owing to tho exceptional conditions under which they wero working, coupled with tho fact that incxperienccd men wero handling the retorts, over 100,000 gallons wont through tho melting, and were not accounted for in any department of tho works. The company nad expressed regret for 'tlio occurrence and hoped tho council would realise tho conditions which prevented them from keeping tho agreement with regard to giving notice of their intention to increase their consumption of water. Tho Mayor said he regretted that tho matter had occurred, and great inconvenience had been caused to tho residents. Ho recognised the difficulties tho Gas Company had been in and hoped it would' not recur; Accounts amounting to JCCI7 lis. were passed for payment.
