HOW MANY MEN?
INFORMATION ASKED BY THE HOUSE EXHAUSTIVE INQUIRIES
The Government is apparently prepared to supply forthwith a great deal of information for which members of Parliament have-been asking of late regarding the Expeditionary Force. The following two motions for returns Mere agreed to l>y the House of Representatives yesterday. The Government did not oppose the' motions, which means in effect that a promise is made that the information will he given. Mr. T. 11. Wilford moved:—That there ho laid before this House a return show(1) The number of men the Government has promised the Imperial authonties on behalf of New Zealand, comprisin" (a) the strength of mam bodies to be°maintained in all fields, (b) the number of men for each reinforcement. • (2) The limit, if any, to bo placed on tho' total number of men to be sent from New Zealand. . . (3) The number of men drawn m the ballots up to the 29th Reinforcement, comnrising (a) the total number of ■ bal- - men reported in' campV (b) the total number of. voluntary recruits reported in camp since the commencement of the balloting, (c) the total number of men clashed os medically unfit, ((1) the total number classed as fit for home servico only, (e) the total number exempted; as bein" connected with essential industries, (f) the total number of clergy, lay preachers and conscientious objectors exempted, (a) the total number wlio lmve icceived exemption on grounds other than tlioso mentioned above, • (U) the total number of men who have been passed; as; tit but have not reported in camp, (1) the total number of men who have failed to respond, in any way to notification. Mr H. .T. H. Okev move<l:-That there l>e kid before this House a return showin" the promise made to tho Home authorities in connection Kith providing men for the present war, the return to 6h (lV'"\Vhat number of battalions were 'Tmat reinforcements were promised" to keep up the strength of those battalions. , , (3) What lias been the wastage to March 31, 1917, by deaths, wounded not fit for further service, and any other wav making them unfit for service. I (i) The number of surplus men that has been sent for reinforcemont purposes now formed into a further brigade. ft) Whether these men should not be used tor tho purpose they were sent— vi*. makiiiff up the wastage. . /(ft The total number of fit men in the Old Country on March 31, 1917.
