MR. HUGHES DECLARES WAR
(Rec. July 19, 5.15 p.m.)
Melbourne, July 19. Mr. W. M. Hughes (Federal Prime Minister), in moving the second reading of tho Unlawful Association Amending .Bill, which aims at tho 1.W.W., said that tho previous Act had been found insufficient to cope with this great menace. Tho larger portion of the member of the I.W.W. consisted of the scourmgs of society. They did not voice the aspirations of organised Labour., They came into being to defeat organised Labour, they had declared war against'. society, and the Government was. accepting the challenge. This body was flourishing, funds were coming in freely;, it threatened to destroy tho industry of tho country, it stood in the way of the country doing its best economically to: assist in tho war, and it therefore could'■ not be allowed to exist. The Bill, he < explained, provides for the prevention of the circulation of I.W.W. literature. ■. Membership of such an association would render a person liable to six months' imprisonent. Any public servant who was a member would be dismissed. The deportation of other than Australian-born' British subjects was also provided for. — Jfress Assn. ;
