At the meeting of the "Wellington Hospital Board yesterday it was moved and carried that the resignation of Dr. Milne (to take effect on-August 5) be accepted with regret. Dr. Milne. is joining the Defence Department next month.

At the annual meeting of the local brunch of the Australasian Institute of Marine Ilngineers, held last evening, Lieutenant .1. Cartiwell, at present on active service, was re-elected to the position of president. It was decided to write to Lieutenant Carswell, congratulating him on his promotion in the field, and wishing him a safe return to New Zealand.

The death is announced Private George Cooper, son of Sir. H. T. Cooper, of Paekakariki, the result of wonnils received in action in I'rance.

Mr. J. 11. Sl'A lister, private secretary to the Minister of l'ublic Works, bys^received cabled advice that his sou, Corporal Hugh Sl'Alister, of the Ritie Brigade, -previously' reported wounded, was "gassed."

Private Thomas Coffey, who is reported as having died of wounds, was a. brother of the Coffey Brothers, horse-trainers, and was well known in Jlasterton anil Hawera. lie was a keen representative footballer. . Private Coffey was the son of a Maori war veteran.

The Masterton Congregational Chnrch is at present without the services of a pastor, tho Rev. B. L; Thomas having resigned some weeks ago. The Rev. A. Hodge, of - Napier, is exercising a pastoral supervision over the district.

The death of Mr. Samuel Hardley, at tlie age of 81 years, removes a. colonist of over lialf a century's residence in New Zealand. He arrived at Port Chalmers in 1663, and took up a claim on the Molyneux. Later he went to the West Coast with several of tho rushes to new finds. Afterwards lie resided for 25 years in Ashburton. From there he went north to Hamilton, and finally to Auckland.
