AMAZING FOLLY OF A MAORI
A returned Maori soldier named Tan Paranlhi appeared in the Magistrate's Court yesterday,-before Mr. W. G.Riddell, 8.M., to answer-a charge; of obtaining a child's perambulator valued at £o 103. from Edwin ■• Arnold, Willis Street, and tendering o. valueless cheque in payment. The cheque bore the s'gnature 'W. Scott," and when presented, at the bank it was found that W. Scott had "no account." The perambulator had not been delivered. Tau Paranihi when at the front distinguished himself,- for he is the proud possessor of the' Distinguished Conduct Medal. While at.Hawera Tau obtained a cheque-book from a little Maori boy, 'and the desire to-make use of the'cheque-' book appears; to have been irresistible He admitted that he was a single,man «nd that the ' perambulator was of no use to him.' The Magistrate warned the accused that he could not do these things, in such a light and airy fashion without getting into gaol. 'Tlou've done goodservice at the front, and then you come back and disgrace yourself." He advised thoi foolish fellow to go back to his farm and to stay there. In view of Paranihi's, excellent record he was convicted and ordered to come -up 'for sentence/when called upon.
