General Korniloff ascertained that tho • Austrian and Gorman General Staffs' plan for the defence of Lemberg ircluded a series of well-fortified positions north-eaßt and east of the city, -whereas no advanced fortifications barred the southern approaches via Halicz. Volunteers, in tho face of almost certain death, crawled out and dragged the. bags away, and the cars advanced and opened fiTC. Subsequently intense and concentrated artillery fire compelled the cars to retire. A German counter-attack was expected on tho following day, and the oars proceeded right up to the enomy's positions, with the result that the counter-attack was rot attempted.
