Further partculars regarding tho disaster to tho steamer Cumberland have been supplied by the Navy Office, Sydney, says the "Shipping List." It appoar's that when tho explosion first occurred enormous damage was done to the ship, <i gaping hole burst iu the side, through which a. Hugo volume of water poured. The oaptatn decided at once to make for Uio nearest land, ivhich happened to bo Gubo Island, to beach the vessel, but so serious did tho position become owing to the inrush of water that the Cumberland was in imminent danger of foundering. Sho was, in fact, slowly sinking, but finally grounded, in time to prevent total loss. The vessel is now lying in a "-omewhat exposed position, with decks awash, and oil holds, engine-rooms, and holler-rooms flooded. Unlesa salvage operations are commenced promptly there is still grayo danger of her total loss. The steamer Merimbnla with salvage appliances has been aispatohed from Sydney, also four divers.

The schooner Lily, -which, has been lcid up on tho slip at. Lytt-elton for some time, past, has been sold to Mr. R. Cook, the son of the late owner. Captain A. Broom, who has commanded her for 27 years will command in the interests of the new owner. The Lily will take up her former running between Kaipara and southern ports. At 5.30 a.m. yesterday tho Ngakuta passed tho Wellington Heads bound for Tokoroaru Bay to discharge a part cargo of coal. She returns to Wellington to unload tho balance. About noon to-day tho Orepuki will arrive from Lyttelton, and will leave this evening, taking cargo for Nelson. Tarakoiie. and Takaka, Captain John Carlson lias come ashore from the liipplo. and Captain R. Fletcher has assumed command. En route from Napier to Golden Bay the trawler Nora Nivon unexpectedly put into Wellington yesterday owing to fairly heavy weather In Cook Strait. The vessel left, during tho night in continuation of her trip. ■ One of the most remarkable developments in this war is reported from South America, where the Government of Chile ?s' proposing to repair somo of its old war«hips and convert them into cargo carriers for the transport of cereals, coal and other necessaries.
