MAORI LANDS
_ A TARANAKI SCHEME HELD UP. Two years ago an Act was passed by ;, the Now Zealand Parliament making pro- » vision, by which Maori land-owners in 9' the Taranaki district were to be allowed P 3 to sell some of their lands in crder to :- get funds to farm the remainder. Btrt I since the passing of the Act there has a been discovered an almost forgotten r clause in a very old Act by which twenty--3 five per cent, of the retnrns from alt ,- Crown lands in the Taranaki district - have to be paid to the New Plymouth. a Harbour Board. If the Maori lands are l purchased they become (frown lands, and s therefore subject to this 25 per_ cent, e charge. Referring to this matter Ul the e House yesterday, Mr. G. V. Pearce said g that this provision was preventing the . carrying out of the scheme. It certainly i- had never been the idea of the House r that this charge was to be levied on s the lands, and'the Harbour Board did V not at the time expect to get the money. ~ Mr. Masses said that he hoped to e place legislation before the House this a session to pnt tho matter right.
