A Press Association cablegram nom London states that Lieut-Colonel GeCrgo St. Hill, of tlio Hussars, lias been killed in action. The late Lieut-Colonel bt. Hill was a sou of tho late' Canon St. Hill, of Napier. Mr. Waltor Lcitch, general manager of tho Blackball coal mine, has been appointed engineer and manager of tho Mount Torlesse mine, Avoca. Victoria. He will take up the duties of his new position on September 1.-Press Association. Mr. 4. L. Wicks, who underwent an. operation in Bowen Street Hospital ft few days ngo, is progressing favourably, but will not lie about for a few weeks yet. Among tho names of -officers awarded the D.S.O. in the last list was that of Lieutenant-Colonel A. Winter Evans. A report of the deed which probably earned for Colonel Evans this distinction lias reached Wellington. One morning four of tho Colonel's men were caught by tee German fire in "No-Man's Land. Advice has been received that Private Norman Keith Jones, eldest son of Mr. George ""Jones, of Pahautanui, was killed in action in France on Juno 7. Tho lata Private Jones was born at Pahautenui twenty-nine years ago. He served his apprenticeship with Mr. D. Wilson, bfaoksmith, Berhampore. Private Jones also carried on his trade at Mnrtinborough. About two years ago he relinquished h3 frade and took up farming, unfit his departure for tho front.

Mr. George Heron, an old Auckland colonist, died at his residence, Kemuera, on. Friday lost, at the age of 82 years. He is survived by a widow and four sons and two daughters.
