There was a noticeablo diffcrcnco between the men who assembled at thn Chamber of Commerce on tho occasion that the Putiki was put up for auction some weeks ago and those who nttended yesterday. On tho first occasion Ihoy appeared to bo spectators rather than speculators, but yesterday they we.ro out for business. The vessel was promptly started at £1000, and in three more bids went to £3500. There were several £250 bids, and at laflT. they got down to increases of £100. Finally the vessel went to Mr. 0. Stewart, of tlio Stewart Timber, Glass, and Hardware Co. Ltd., at tho prico of £5300. There- was another bid. but tho hammer fell just heforo it was given. Jtr. Stewart, was not prepared to say yesterday what trade tho vessel would enter. Levin and Co. were tlio auctioneers. HINEMOA'S MOVEMENTS. Rho will then undergo engine-room repairs and several days later ivill leavo on her nuartcrl.v visit to the southern lighthouses and harbours. BLACKBALL COMPANY. Mr. -Turner, local agent, advises that the Mctakuta, has been loaded with coal at (ircvinouth for somo time. but. is imabln to cross tho har.- She has cargo for Tokoniaru Bay and Wellington. Tho vossel will first visit Tokomaru, Bay to dlecbargo some 300 tons, and will then return W Wellington. -Sho is now expected, in Wellington next, Monday. Tho Ngatoro has proceeded to Port Chalmers, as the dock was not. available at, Lyttclton. At, Tort Chalmers the vessel will ro into dock and havo hor propelior repaired, and will also lie cleaned and painted. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. W. Hoad. engineer of thn Wakatu, has come ashoro. and has been replaced by Sir. J. A. Moye6. Mr. G. R. Sherrett lias joined the Maori as fifth engineer, replacing Mr. C. Legoys, who has como ashoro. Mr. .1. Norton, purser of tho Mararoa, has conic ashore, and has been replaced by Mr. Ci. T. Crawley. The Wootlon is fixed to leavo Lyttelton to-night, and is duo on Wednesday morning with a full cargo of produco from the southern port. Sho leaves for Lyttclton at, 6 p.m. to-morrow. With a. full cargo of produco, tho John is due to-morrow, from southern ports. Tho vessel's future movements were not definite yesterday. It, was oxpected that, the Magic would remain in Wellington until tho slip was available to take tho vessel up for repairs, but it has now been decided that she will leavo about Friday for tho quarries at Sandy Bay to load for Wellington. To-day the Storm is duo from Wangariui, and will tako cargo for Lyttolton, Dunedin, and Tiniaru. To-morrow the Breeze will,arrive from thoso southern ports and proccod to Wanffanui.
