WOMEN POLICE
fDEPUTATION TO MINISTER. ' - By Telegraph—Press Association. , Christchurch, July 16. ' Tho appointment of" women police, was urged as a matter of necessity, almost as a war measure, by a deputation of women who waited on the Hon. G. W. Russeil to-daj-. It was made clear that the deputation did not. expect women police to discharge the same duties as male police, but to engage in patrolling New Brighton beach, giving attention to the conduct of week-end shacks, and advising young people found on the streets at night not under adequate protection. .Mr. Russell said that police matters were under-the charge of the Hon. A. L. Herdman, and he (Mr. Russeil) did not thiuk there was jnuch chance of' .tlia appointment of women police to do the work done by policemen 1 . He was having a Bill drafted to be submitted to Parliament this session, providing for the appointment of women as patrol officers. They would act in the interests of young people by warning them of danger and by advising them to return to .their homes at night.
