RACING AT TRENTHAM

WINTER MEETING CONCLUDED MASTER STROWAN WINS BIG STEEPLECHASE The Wellington Racing Club , * Winter Meeting concluded in glnrinun weathrr and before a large, attendance, which would liavo been bigger had t.bo trains been ablo to accommodate those, offering. The racing was ngnln full of Eiirpr'iscfl, and some woll-baoked favourites suffered defeat. Tho big Steeplechase was robbed of a, lot o£ internet through the favourite, 111 Oallo, fallinu over Mawson at, ton third tonco. In tho onon mile. Hewitt rodo Centre out of tho barrier with tho whip, and the chestnut began smartly anil led tho wholo way. Tarnni .Tack had a very easy win In tho Hurdles, but the way 'was paved for him by Art and Kowl Polo mooting trouble early in tho race. The betting was spirited, and nearly .£BOOO went through lu the concluding event. For the doy tho total was £46,579.

NOTES ON THE RACING

Flying Oamp, who was making his first appearanco at tho mooting, 'i'hraco, ilnd Goldon Qlado were all well backed in the I'alavora. Hurdles, but neither o£ tho trio could gain a place, though they wore well up at tho finish. At tho start Compulsion and Miss Sation led a racked field, nil of .-whom .wore jumuins ivcll. Goins ncroßß the top Golden Glade got on to another, horse's heels and was nearly down. Tho two loaders continued down tho baok, and wero first into tho straight. At the last feuco First Consul lost his rider, and San Sebastian challenged tho leader. A good raeo homo resulted in the Timaru horse winning, beating Compulsion, with Miss Sation three- lengths away, and ihen came Yarilla, Golden Glade, and liying Damp.

Toki and Blairfinde wore withdrawn from the Onslow Handicap. OrocBUS and Tip Up divided publio favouritism, and of tho pair the top-weight did best, but he was comfortably beaten at tho finish by Merrie I'oto, who was quick to find his feet, and led tho whole way. Comment was a fair third, and then caino Glenroy, Probation, and Bairnsdale. Hyllus oaught the barrier at tho start, and had his ohancea spoilt, wliilo the topweight also seemed slow to find his feet.-

Kaupokouui was a warm order in the Hock Steeples, and ho gave a fino exhibi-' tlon of safo jumping, but in this respect ho was outclassed by tho ancient Tcuira, who seems, to have taken a new lease of life, and after going sin furlongs he pulled to tho front, and tho fast pace ho set brought down most of tho field. Th« favourite was. In second place six furlongs from home, but he oould not cto the pace set by Tauira-. Coalition and Merry Jack Wero the 'only others to finish. Sardinia and Johnny Walker were the favourite selections in tho Crofton Handicap, but though both ran good races tJioy failed to got a place. Tho raco was ni-arred br some rough ridinj, and tho ton-w6ights all suffered, and were scut back to last after going a furlong. Kilkeo wa.s early in charge, and with 'Cello and May Morn led into tho straight. The Eio-carton-traincd animal held his own, and wop easily. Six Agnes came fast, ,and out" Hay Morn" out of Eooond place. I?ongora, who also got a bad passage, finished fourth. '. ■ '

El Gallo was a great public favourite for the July Steeples, in whioh ho nas backed down to a very short price. Ho met disaster early when Mawsoii fell in front of him and Tapp became unseated. Master Strowan made most of the running, and led till tho half-mile, whero Orib, St. Elmn, and Braeburn joined in. Orfb assumed command at tho last fence, but Mastor Strowan came again, anrt won in a good finish. St. Elmtt was six lengths awar. and Braeburn was next. Kilkce, who had laced earlier In tho •day, was the only withdrawal from" the Winter Oats Handicap, leaving seventeen runners. Tho bettlngf was very wide, all the rnnner3 coming in for, good support. Baumanuwhlrl; who was a good favourite, was put on tho outsido at the barrier. Centre was quiokest to begin, and with George he led down the back from Grand Idea, Toki, and!the favourite. Across the bottom the favourite was in trouble, but the leaders held their- places. Centre was' under the stick two furlongs from home, but he stuck to his task and won. George wa3 the came distance in front of Grand Idea, and then oamo Maro Antony, Goldstream, and Kauri King.

The Final Hurdles resulted in rather an easy'win for TaTa.ru Jack, who displayed ' greatly improved form compared with his effort in the' Winter Hurdles. It; was a great betting race, and several of the top-weights were heavily backed. Art was a slightly better favourite than Eowl Poto and Penniless, but the two former both nad their chances spoilt when Tocberpf fell at the second fence. Penniless made the running to tho homo turn, whero Taraxu Jack took charge, and won easily from Gladful, who sha.ped very well. Penniless again eavo a. splendid exhibition of jumping, but did not see out the .ionrney. Whnkatina- and Kojput each carried over four figures In the concluding: event, while there was plenty of support for tho Rokebv filly Eobur. At the start the l.wo favourites and Madam Ristori -were prominent, and In a close finish Whakalitia. .nisi, boat Rajput, with Euripos finishing fast in.third place.
