THE CATHEDRAL SCHEME

HEARTILY COMMENDED BY THE VICAR OF ST. PAULS.

The proposal to build a great Anglican Cathedral as! a thankoffering and memorial to New Zeaknd' fallen soldiere was referred to by the Rev. A. M. JchnBon in the course of his sermon at St. Paul's pro-Cathedral yesterday morning. Mr. Johnson said the Synod's decision to build a cathedral was a dignified reply to the reeont declaration of a Wellington professor that public worship was "glorified idleness." The proposed cathedral would be an impressive witness to tho belief that "the Lord sitteth above the water-floods; the Lord remainoth a lun» for ever." Mr. Johnson went on to say that St. Paul's, the mother churoh of tho diocese, might suffer as the result of the erection of the Cathedral in another part of the city, but ho hoped the people of St. Paul's would not take a narrow or eolfish view of the magnificent scheme which had been placed beforo tho diocese. He commended the proposal to the hearty and generous support of his congregation. Ho hoped that for the next five years the parishioners of St. Paul's would not allow themselves to be engrossed in. the task of making provision for their own needs, but would do their best to ensure the 6uccess of the Cathedral scheme. Jlr. Johnson then proceeded to give ha views as regards the meaning and r aiuo of public worship. .
