THE GAS TROUBLE

MATTERS SLIGHTLY IMPROVED. Inquiry last evening elicited the statement that the situation at the gas works is more favourable, and a distinct improvement in the supply services is hoped tor during tho week. The work of reorganising tho working staff is proceeding slowly but with every appearance of satisfactory progress. Tho new men yesterday showed that they were getting accustomed to the work, and turned out the gas very well. To-day the supply will be available from 7 a.m. till 5.30 p.m.

ARMY DESERTERS

PAYMENT FOR APPREHENSION. Authority has been given (states a district order) for tho payment of a reward not exceeding 20s. to any member of tho New Zealand Police Force for tho.ftpprehension of a, deserter from the Now Zealand Expeditionary Force. The reward will also be paid to any member of the Now Zealand Police Forco for the apprehension of a deserter from concentration, if arrested on a warrant signed by a Group Commander. The reward is not payable where Hit; deserter voluntarily gives liimself up to the police authorities. Claims arc to bo submitted to District Headquarters, and will then bo forwarded to Headquarters for preaudit prior to payment.
