THE CASUALTIES
The' information disclosed to Parliament by Sir James Allen that up to July 3 the New Zealand casualties totalled 26,000, of which 18,729 represented the wounded, should indelibly impress upon, the minds of those who remain in tile Dominion'safe and sound the duty they owe to the brave mon who will return wounded No tioubt many of tlie wounded will be restored to health und physical fitness, but a large proportion will be crippled and maimed for life. It is for these -unfortunate follows that a committee of Wellington women are endeavouring to raise fnnds to establish the Crippled Soldiers' Hostel, where the. 1 maimed warrior may have a comfortable hii'nie after thestrenuous life of the battlefield. There is already a Soldiers' Hostel at Newtown, which is well fulfilling its purpose. But this has bcon found to be too far from the centre of tho city. Therefore it has been decided to establish a hostol handy lo the wharves and trains, and on a, larger scale. Here the friendless, crippled warrior will bo able to enjoy the comforts of a home, and when ho is able to augment his wellearned pension by taking on light work he will Tie handy to such employment in the city. Particulars of the art union to be held , to raise funds for this purpose are advertised in this issue. Prizes amount to JJIOOO. Tickets are sixpence each'.
