AUSTRALIA'S EFFORT
(To tho Editor.) Sir,—l notice in ;rspecch made by tho Prime Minister at Franklin, and lie is reported to have stated that 75,000 men, had left for the front, and that there was another 10,000 u camp. The 75,000 men sent to tho front works out at barely 7 per cent on a population basis, taking tho population of New Zealand at 1,100,000. A great number of people in New Zealand are under tho impression that Australia has shirked her responsibility in this great war because she has rot brought in conscription, although I myself believo in conscription, as it is the only just way in a war like this. According to the figures given out by the military authorities in Australia, aud published in The Dominion a week cr two ago, that Australia had sent, up to April 30, 361,31!). The population 'of Australia, including Tasmania, is 4,931,988, which works out on a population basis of nearly 7! per cent. I think' you will find these figures correct. I trust you will kindly publish this letter in fairness to Australians.—l am, etc, ■AN AUSTRALIAN 1 .
