BOOKMAKING
REPORT TO THE RACING ' CONFERENCE.
The report presented yesterday by the' Stipendiary Stewards' Committee \o the Racing Conference contained the following reference to bookmaking:— "We regret to .state -definitely tnat rowing to" the want of an'efficient detective system, Ijookmakilig both on and off courses has increased very considerably during the, past season. It is tllcgedi, upon apparently reliably authority ttat some of tlic leading bookmakers in th& larger centres openly employ fairly large stalls to ileal with the immense amount: of business actually thrust upon tnem. However large the amount seems of totalisirtor investments'in tho Dominion, it. would surprise the conference, and. should surprise the authorities, should the total turnover of the' T\evr Zealand bookmakers be "made public. ■ "The revenue lost to the country, injury done to owners from loss ot monejthat should be devoted to prize money, and consequent loss to racing clubs, warrants the strongest action both by tlie conference and Government to put an end to the evil of bookinaking. ■
