BALLOT APPEALS

YESTERDAY'S LIST BEFORE THE WELLINGTON BOARD The Third Military Service Board dealt with a fresh list of appeals yesterday. Mr. 11. J. Beswick presided, and with him were Messrs. SI. J. Mack and A. O'L.. Considine. Captain P. Baldwin is the military representative. William M'Gregor, commercial traveller, Rongatai Terrace, asked for extension of time. He was granted leave till August 22.

Frederick C. Fowler, second steward at the Fire Brigade Station, Thorndon, applied for exemption. Mr. J. O'Sheii,

City Solicitor, appeared in support of tho application. He explained that appellant was really a fireman. It was very necessary to have an efficient brigade at Thorndon if only on account of the shipping in that neighbourhood. Superintendent Tait said that the brigade could not very well do with fewer permanent men than it had at present. Mr. Mack suggested that if propertyowners were to employ moro nightwatciimen that might considerably assist tho brigade. The chairman said that no doubt tho case wits one of great inconvenience, but tho fire brigade must suffer inconvenience, like everybody else. The appeal would be dismissed, and appellant would go into camp on August 22. George Percivnl A very, salesman, Hataitai, had bpen wrongly drawn in the ballot after his case had been adjourned sine die by another board. The case was again adjourned sine die.

An ap|>eal for timo on the ground of hardship was made by Henry Jarnos Alexander, plumber and gasfitter, ot Lyall Bay. Appellant was allowed leave till August 22.

Norman D. Smalo, warehouse. assistantVivian Street, asked for a rehearing of his appeal. He stated that he was an only son. His mother was suffering from the effects of a paralytic stroke, whicli she had had about a fortuight ago. Sho had no other relatives in New' Zealand. Dr. Hislop gavo evidence as to tho mother's condition. The caso was adjourned for a month.

Arthur. Philip Murphy, public school teacher, Wellington Terrace, appealed on the ground of undue hardship. Ho stated, among other thing:?, that ho had five brothers. One had been killed at Gallipoli, two were on the Western front, and ouo was in camp. Another brother would shortly bo drawn in the ballot, and would not appeal if the present appellant were exempted. The board adjourned the caso sine die.

The appeal of Lionel liooth Fleming, clerk in the employ of the Education Board, Napier, was dismissed. Appellant had previously put in an application for financial assistance, but the Financial Assistance Board had deckled that appellant was not entitled to any help. The appeal of Wdlliam Albert Glovor was dismissed, the board granting appellant leave till August 22. Denis Brcen, shearer, Pitarua Street, appealed on 'llio ground of public interest. Mr. Grayiuiler, secretary of the Shearers' Federation, appeared in Mipport of the appeal. "This man does not seom to Iμ a very enthusiastic shearer," remarked the chairman. "He spends most of his time with 'the Vacuum Oil Uompany." The board adjourned tho case for a fortnight The board mado a similar adjournment in the case of Timothy O'Keill, (mother shearer. John Patrick Casey, master plumber and drainlnyer, Tainui Terrace, alleged that his case was one of hardship, and asked for 'time. The case was adojuriied for a month.

The appeals of tho following Catholic priests were adjourned sine (fie:—E. J. Dully, P. J. Minogue, Eugene E. Ivimboll, iioberf. P. Mngcun, and Joseph J. Cullen.

Mervyn Uswahl Stewart, accountant, Kolburn, was granted an extension, of time till August 22.

Mr. M. J. lleardon, secretary of the New Zealand Slaughtermen's Federation, appealed for the exemption of Sydney Arthur Bishop, slaughterman, of Clareville, Carterton. The case was adjourned uint die.

The employer of Cornelius Whelan, Egmont Street, applied lor nn extension of time. Whelan was a member cf the statt of Bacon's Atrated Waters ■ Factory, which supplied large orders so the Defence Department. Leave lo August i'l was granted. Duncan Fraser satisfied tha board thai ho was two months over military age. Bis appeal was allowed. A joint nppsal was made by Angus Warner Thompson, boot operator, and hie employer. The case was adjourned sine die, and will be reviewed before the Second Division men ore "ailed up.

George Herbert R'.nith, pork butcher, Coiirtenay Place, said he had lost four trothera in Vraiue. He himself hud enlisted live times, and had boon turned •iown. He asked for time to dispose of his business. "This is a magniiieunt record," commented the chairman. "Appellant seems to be entitled to something out of tho ordinary, if. what he fays is true," said Mr. Mack. The case was iidjmiriiwl to enable the latter to be Hooked into. The chairman said that if tho facts proved to be as appellant hail stated, then the board would grant an adjournment sine die. The board dismissed Hie appeal of ,T. W. Najfle, and granted him leave till August 22, provided he eontinnss in his occupation of iron-moulder. Nagle said

he was a conscientious objector, ;uul was not prepared to serve even ivilh. the Ambulance. The leave granted vas obtained on the appeal of his emplojer.
