THE FISHING INDUSTRY

AND ISLAND BAY'S INTERESTS.

A large deputation from the Island' Bay Municipal Electors' Association waited on the City Council last eveninto ascertain, if possible, what site the council proposed to select for the proposed fashing industry works. Tjiey had waited on the Minister concerned! and he had informed them that the matter was in the hands of the council. Mr. C. Odlin said that they were all agreed that if fishing works wero to bo erected, they wished to bo consulted about it, as there was a prospect of such an industry being a nuisance during the summer months. They wished to know where the wharf was to bo and where the factory was to be established.

Mr. Collins said tlmt the fishing industry badly wanted controlling. They did not wish to be parochial in the matter, but with Island Bay as a residential area, and a popular summer seaside resort, they wished the council to have the full benefit of their local knowledge. Mr. C. Baylis said that the Minister of Marine had mentioned that the indusfry might, after the war, be a New Zealand one, mid with the big boats that would be employed thon they were not likely to use Island Bay at all', but would conn; right inb Wellington. Councillor Luckie said tho matter of establishing a factory at Island Bav had never been before the council. All tho council wished to c!n wh to control tho industry as it existed.

The Mayor said that the Minister (the Hon. W. Russfll) had expressed tha idea of idontifyina Wellington with the fis-Mng industry, bit further than that nothing had been done, but he promised to look after the interests of Island Bay ns a residential area, and that tho residents would know as much about any proposed works in regard to a fishery as though they sat round tlie council ;jle.
