Another attempt was made yesterday to put on the Wellington Patent Slip the barque which got into troublo at* tho Heads recently. Early yesterday the carriage was lengthened so as to take the vessel, and it was thought that she would he ■ successfully got on tho slin.. About 10.30 a.m. three tugs took charge of the vessel, with Captain J. Dawson (harbourmaster) in charge of all, and the barquo arrived at Hie slip at about 11.30 a.m. An hour and a half sufficed to get tho vessel over the cradle and ready to pull on to the slip, and then operations were suspended as it was deemed advisable to send a diver down to see that she was right on the keel blocks, and moreover the polo carrying tho ropes attached to the bilge blocks hart been pushed out of position when tho boat was to port of the cradle It was found, however, that the sailer was , not lying right on the keel blocks as she j did not touoh the new blocks put down j when the carriage was lengthened. Before ' 5. p.m. the vessel was hauled up to the I same position as sho was in on Tuesday, I and Bbe ,will be let back this morning. The carriage will then bo altered as necessary, an,d it is hoped that she will be < safely up on the slip by noon to-day. |
MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. W. It. V. Waterson, who it will bo remembered recently fell down the hold of a vessel in Wellington, intends to spend several weeks' sick leave in llobart. The broken bones are now knitting, but the wound on his wrist and the nerves in his wrist arc still in a fairly had condition. Captain Bollons, who lias boon undergo-' iiiß medical treatment in a private hospital, is reported to be now improvin" in health, but it will still bo some considerable time before ho will bo about again Mr. 0. G. Madden, lute purser of the J'atcena, has arrived in Wellington for orders.
The iLOltm should arrive to-night or tomorrow morning from Grcymouth, with a cargo of coal. Tho Karamu will now call horc to-day for hunkers, ell route from Napier to Westport.- . ,
