WELLINGTON WINTER

MEETING

JIG STEEPLECHASE WON BY CRIB

LEONTA'S WINTER HURDLES,

The Winter Meeting of tho Wellington Eaomg Club opened in dull weathof, but the attendance seemed up to the-usual despite the absenco of special trains. Visitors were, present from all parts of tho -'XKuninion, and included sovcral members »v '5? Legislature and tho delegates to mb,.Racing Conference, Trotting Conference, and Country Clubs' Association. Tho ■wentnam Camp Band was in attendance. k The totalißator Investments for tho day amounted to £31,284. On tho corrospondHM da? last year tho machine put through: A 03,765 The racing was good,-but in the saajority of'events tho public fared badly, •iho big event was well won by tho Tim-aru-trained and owned Crib; who was always going like a winner. Ho is a pev'lecfc jumper of the clashing order, and after his success in his first steeplechase the Australian-bred liorso became a much ' discussed, National. favourite. El Gallo reaped well, but the heavy going and his 'big weight helped to beat him, while ho was nearly over at the post aid rails-the' iast tune. He was very 'tired at the last .?.!?. Mount Victoria stood on tha mark and took no part in tho race. Compulsion was showing up two furlongs from home, but tho weight then beat him. Brown' Loch's rider broke a leather and the horse was pulled up. ' ' Miss de Val. Tip Up, and Potentiality were all well baoked in the Stewards' Handicap. . At tho start the last-named. Probation,'and Madam Eistori.weroShowing tip, but as they raced on to the course proper Miss de Val Balrnsdale and George singled themselves out. Over tho final furlong Miss de Val wore down Georgeand won by a couple of lengths. Bairnsdale was the samo distance away, and' then oame Tip Up and Madam -Eistori. Tho .winner has only been up a short time, but ehe stripped well, and evidontly races well fresh. Tip Tip should do better at his neit outing.

bome splendid .jumping mag seen in the Hack and Hunters' Steeples, though several of the runners came down. Dood, .Cjaronus and Hew. were .the elect, of backers. Over the first part of the journey Xew, Marvelite, and Paremata were showing the way, with Merry Jack In the rear. Marvelite lei! ■ after going . a mile, and Paremata and Kew led Kiwitea to the ■water jump. : The . positions were much th 6 same down the baok,. but 'with half a mile to go Kiwitea jumped himself to the front and won well from Kaupokonui, who came faEt at the" finish. :Paremata "was third and then came Pawerewere, Torchy, and Union Jack. Schnapper fell and' broke his neck. . • i

Marker was the good thing the machine suggested for the Trial Plate.' He was not well placed over the first part- but came through at, the bottom of tho straight and won very easily from the second favourite, Lady Beaufort, an Auh-tralian-bred youngster. Kohlnahina waß third, and'then came.Euripos. The winner is a good advertisement for the imported King Mark, who looks like provinz a success at the stud. ' ...

It was a good field that'contested, the "Wellington Steeplechase, and the race was run at a clipping pace throughout, whllo the jumping was exceptionally good. Tho whole - field stripped well, but El Gallo and Crib stood out as racehorses. Crib was a'slightly better favourite'than the top-weight. At the start Soporifio led Fagot and Collector, with the top-weight in the rear. After going a, mile Honorific ran off and Kirkby led Fagot, Crib and Merrie Lad, with Braeburn handy. Collector's gear oame undone and he was pulled up at the stone wall the second time. At the top of the course Braeburn ■bumped Deerey off. Down the baok the last time drib and.Merrie Lad were out by themselves with the top-weight com-, ing fast in third place. He chanced tho post and rails, but stood up. At the haystack'Orib took charge, but a-faulty jump at the nest fence allowed Merrie Lad to get on terms. The trio lumped the. hencoop together, but' Crib had the Dace on the fiat and won nicely from.the Napior bor6e. Kirkby was several lengths back, and in a bunch came Jaeiman, Fagot and Becord. El Gallo fell at[ the' last. fence or he would have been third. An outsider, in Orleans, .prevailed in the Parliamentary Handicap, whioh was an interesting race throughout. At the start Toki and Centre led Grand Idea and a bunohed field. At the end of 6ii furlongs Centre began to fade and Maro Antony- took his place. Goldstrcnjn,, Orleans and Johnny Walker were prominent behind the leaders at the. bottom of the Etraight. In the run home Toki dosed up and Orleans-shot out, and, finishing fast, he caught Grand Idea and beat liim by a head. Goldstream was a neck away, and then came Kauri King, Tokj, and Marc Antony. Heeltap ran badly, but the tonweijht shaped very well. . •' ■ '

The whole of the sixteen acceptors 1 , went to the post for'the. Winter Hurdles. The majority of the nmners were evenly backed, with the Auokland-owned Penniless the actual favourite. At the first fence Sir FiEher fell, and Pennilcsß. and Moululed np the straight. Down the back the pair strung out the field. With Bix furlongs to go Leonta, Eewi Poto, and-Gladful.be-came prominent in behind . the leaders. At the half-mile Eewi Poto had charge, bnt a faulty jump loßt Mm his position,

i and Penniless again led. At tha last fenco ho and Leonta roflo together, but the Wanganui horse woa tho more seasoned ! and won comfortably. Gladful beat Bowl Poto by a heaij. and then camo Penniless, Want, Art, and Tararu Jaok, tho last-named, in particular, finishing fast. Twonty-ftve horse 3 lined up at tho barrier for tho To Aro Handicap. Ba.iput was tho best baokcd, but several of tlio others camo in lor heavy support. At tho start the colours of Merrio Poto wore showing out prominently, but onco on the course proper, Charley oamo through in the middto of tho course, and finishing well, he won by a good margin from Black Hill. The favourite was third, then camo Sunshade and Humorist.
