ALLEGED SEDITIOUS STRIKE
" * : FIREMEN ON A COAL STEAMER, At the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon, beforo Mr. W. G. Riddeli, S.M., the hearing of the charges brought against a number of firemen on an intercolonial coal steamer of being: parties .to a seditious strike was concluded. The firemen concerned were: G. Anscombe, W. M. Green, Robert Hand, James Mathews, W. Maior. Qharies M'Lean, W. Simc, and P. Fitshall. , ■ ■ Mr. P. S. K. Macassey, or. the Crown Law Office, appeared for the prosecution, and Mr. H. P. O'Leary represented all the accused. The case against James Mathews, who was spokesman for. the others, was the. only one taken, and as uo further evidence was called for the defence the Magistrate said the case was one of con. siderable importance, and no matter lionhe decided the case there would probably lw an appeal. He therefore decided to look closely into the evidence, and decision was reserved. The tases against the other defendants were mentioned by Mr. Macassey. : • Mr. O'Leary said he would agree io the evidence already given to apply to all the other cases. His Worship said it was intended to take only one • case, and the decision would govern tho others.
