Danes in the Sydney Slrcet Soldiers' Club. The ilanco which was given by tin: committee of the Sydney Street Soldiers' Club l.iot evening lor the 28th Keiuforcemciits was attended by a record number of soldiers, <i lid had the mail] room in which if whs held been almost, twice the size it would not have been too big. Tho arrangements, which are made by the comiiiitleo for these occasions, were carried out as nsu'il, and Madame Foley supplied excellent music. Une of the noticeablo features about these evenings is the great variety of dances which vary the programme., and which show what versatile dancers tho soldiovs' are, all tho old dances being seized upon just as much as tho moro recent ones.. Tn charge of Iho teai'oom was tho St. John Anibulanco Nursing Guild, and in tho circumstances they had a very busy evening. Quite a number of {sailors wero also present last evening. The singing of the National Anthem and "Auld Lang Syne," and cheer.-? for the ladies brought a. very successful and enjoyable c\ cniii.tr to n dose.. "Charley's Aunt" Social Club. The fortnightly gathering of _Jhe "Charley's Aunt" Social Club was neld in tho club rooms in Ccnrtenay Plaeo la=t. evening. Mr. W Eraser occupied tho chair. The first part of the programme. consisting of songs, choruses, etc.. was provided by tho Eastbourne O'Kiwi Minstrels, Mr. AY. Bjunclt acting as Tambo, Mr. Georgo Warren as tho interlocutor, and Mr. H. Downes as Bones. The, orchestra provided the overture, and the contributing ininstivls wtre Messrs. C. M. Baker, H. Downs. Y. Warren, W. Bennett, and H. livans, all of whom contributed songs, comic _ tr otherwise. The visitors were received with much cordiality, and their part of the entertainment was greatly appreciated. Mrs. Karl, wife of Lieutenant F. J. B. Earl, who has been awarded tho Military Cross, is staying with Mrs. H. B. Elder at W.iimahoe, Waikanne.

The AVairnrapa Sub-Centre of Iho Red Cross Society and Lady Liverpool Committee lias resolved to follow a similar course to that adopted last year, and to Bead to England a sum of money for the purchase of Christmas gifts for AYairarapa soldiers on active service.

As tho result of a concert held in the Town Hall, Featherston, on Tuesday night over X'M was raised on behalf of the Red Cross Fund. Tho programme was contributed by members of the 28th Artillery, assisted in "several items, by Miss Livingstone, a vocalist who met with a very encouraging reception. Solos, duets, humorous sketches, and a chorus item parodying "The Long, Long Trail" —a specially popular contribution—formed tho vocal portion of the programme, and duets and trios, together with several orchestral selections wero included in the instrumental features. Encores wero frequently demanded. Dr. Palmer, on behalf of those assembled, thanked the secretaries, Mesdames AV. E. Bidwill and N. P. Adams, for their work of organisation, and tho artillerymen for their highly successful effort on behalf of so laudable an object.

Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Hudson, of i\totueka, aro residing at 15 Burnell Avenue for the session.

Mrs. Elder .(Waikanae) is spending a few days in AVellington.

Tho fortnightly meeting of the AVellington South Nursing Division was held on Tuesday evening. The attendance '.vas satisfactory and good work done in first aid bandaging, tho members working in squads.

' Mr. T. Pringle is the organiser of a concert to be held at the Returned Soldiers' Club this evening, followed by a dance.

The second half-yearly oox-openiug of the Karori branch of the Young Helpers League took place at the Parochial Kail, Karori. His Worship tho Mayor 'Mr. B. 11. Burn) presided, and wished all good fortune. The childien, their parents, and friends wero entertained with music, games, and afternoon tea. The president and secretary, Mrs. 11. Conk and Miss Dorothy Edwards, thank tho committeo and their friends who helped to make the afternoon such a success. The proceeds for the half-year, including the box nionev, the proceeds from sale of sweets and (lowers, and the Mayor's donation, amounted to .£22.

Sailors' Friend Society. Madame Dempster arranged the concert given at; the Sailors' J<Viontl Society on Tuesday night, when every item was loudly encored. Jlr. Moore, Mi.ssioner, was in iho chair, and spoke on "Rum .Rations." Eight men signed I lie pledge at the elosc. The following were warmly thanked for a bright, helpful evening: Madame Dempster, the Misses Harris, Pickthall, L. Karris, Sampson .(-), and Monkman, and Messrs. Monkman, Dempster, and Black. On "Wednesday afternoon the sub-com-mittee of the Ladies' Auxiliary of lha Navy Leaguo met at the depot, Jcrvois Quay. The organiser was in the chair. The report and balei:ce-shcet for tile month were read. Good progress has been made again this month. Assistance from Waverloy, Mai ton, JohiisonviUc. Raetihi, and Masterlon helped forward tho work considerably. Besides this, much assistance was given locally, friends in tho city coming to tho workroom to *ew and pack, and others sowing in their own homes regularly for this cause. July has stated oft' well and much good work is expected this month. The work goes on till the end of August, so that all who can sheuld help now. From AVeduosday last the depot is being kopt open overy week day but Saturday, between the hours of 10.31) a.m. and 5 p.m. Children's cut-out garments are now being given out to sew at home.

Seven cases nf goods have just recently been dispatched from tho depot, and during tho past two months the workers have sent away 1221 garments. An appeal which they are making just now on behalf of fifteen men, who, as tho result of being torpedoed on board their own ships, have been brought out to Now Zealand, and are within a short time returning. They arrived in this country most of them without clothing of any kind, save what they wore, and the cominitleo appeals for sizes in oilskins from No. .'i upwards, and particularly for underclothing for the icon. One of their number has had more experiences than usually fall to the lot of even sailors, as he was on board the torpedcer Marquette for a . start, and was instrumental in helping to save several of our nurses although lie had been in hospital when the torpedoing took place. Contributions of clothing should be sent to the depot (Naval Boating Shed, Jcrvois Quayl not later than Friday. The secretary (Mrs. Waters) will be pleased to answer all inquiries.

The committee of tho Levin Memorial Home held their monthly meeting;, on Tuesday. Mrs. AVest Knowles "was in the chair, and nine members were present. It was reported that one child left (he home and one was admitted during the month. Gifts of clothing, etc., were received with thanks from Mrs. William Christie, Mrs. Oliver Samuels, St. Thomas's Church, and Messrs. Hurcombe and Sons. The ladies of the Patriotic Cake Room thanks the following donors of cakes, subscriptions, etc.:—Mesdames Smittou, .T. Campbell, Holmes, Hayward, Hurst, C. Richardson, J. Findlay, G.
