THE HUTT ROAD
GOVJiRNiMENT AID TO BE EEQUESTED. The Mayor (Mr. .T. P. Luke), Messrs. 11. Baldwin (Hutt), J. M. Daio (Onslow), .1. M'akeham (Hutt County), and J. H. llaggcrty (Makara County) were present at "a meeting of the Hutt Eoiul Board, held in tho Mayor's office yesterday afternoon. 'J'ho estimates for the maintenance of tlio road, as drafted by tlio City Engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton) were again considered. '.I'll© total amount was J21608. It was resolved that tlio estimates for tho current year be .£3500, and that tlio sum of Jitlld'J, excess expenditure incurred last year, bo added, making tho amount JilSO'J to bo found during tho current year; also that the board communicate with tho Hostar Company, of Taranaki, asking for a quotation for the work of surfacing a section of tlio road with "rcstar." It was arranged that on receipt of a reply from the company another meeting of the liqard will be made-. In reply to an inquiry the Town Clerk (Mr. J. K. Palmer) said that respecting tho matter of Government subsidies tor road maintenance, he had been advised that the. Government had paid £250 towards'the cost of making d road to the Eeatherston County Council, and there was a probability of them paying another .£3OO. but no subsidy had been P Mr. H. Baldwin said ttat it was clear that tlio Government was assisting local bodies where their own trafiic was cone'erned and he had been informed thaT, the heavy Government traffic over IJio Hutt Road was of a damaging character. On his motion-it was resolved tnattle Minister concerned be interviewed and that representations be made to the Government to make a contribution towards the maintenance of the Mutt Road, in view of the heavy traffic by Government vehicles and motor orncs . between Wellington and Trentham Lamp. Draft by-laws for the control of traffic over the road were presented by the City Solicitor with addenda from the City Engineer.- , , Mr. Baldwin said that it had been indicated to him that the difference between an ordinary bicycle and a motor-bicycle had not been defined in the by-laws, and also that tail lights were not specified for in vehicles other than motor lorries. Ho pointed out that in ordinary goods vans and drays tail lights were necessary, as their loads sometimes projected eight, nine, and even ten feet over the tail-board, and were highly dangerous to the overhauling vehicle. Mr. O'Shea said the by-laws tad cnly been drawn up to give tho board something to go upon, and did not purport to be perfect. He mentioned that a man had been fined .EG 10s. last week for riding a motor-cycle on the cycle track. With regard to tail lights for ordinary vehicles it would be quite at vf-nance with the by-laws of any of the grounding boroughs, and experience taught that when a by-law conflicted with I hose of all the neighbouring boroughs, they were liable to be upset by the Courts. Mr. Haggerty thought it might bo unfair to impose such a by-law: He wanted to know what would be the position ot a horse. , , ~ , .. It was suggested jocularly that it should wear alight on its tail. The bylaws are to bo overhauled by Messrs. O'Shea and Dnlo before ]>eing submitted to the board for approval.
