RACE TRAINS
TWO TRAINS TO BE STRENGTHENED
PROBABLE TIMETABLE
With tho Winter Meeting of the Wellington Eacing Club to bo held on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday of tbia week, the question of transportation, to and from the course- at 'J.'rentham is ono which ie being discussed by intending race-goers. So far, no announcement of tho provision of extra accommodation has been made by the Eailway Department, but it is understood that two of the regular time-table trains are to bo "strengthened" by the addition of carriages, and that a limited number of passengei-a for Trentham will bo allowed to use other regular trains. The first train from Lambton to Upper Hutt leaves the city shortly after seven in the morning. Usually it consists of from three to five carriages. A few racegoers, probably including the staffs of tho various, racecourse establishments, will bo permitted to use this train. Tho "ten-to-eight" Woodvillo express is the nest train to leave, and as it does not take passengers for places south of Upper Hutt it is not expected that passengers for Trentham will get on board. The "eight-thirty" mixed train for Woodvillo is another upon which a limited number of race-goers are to be allowed, but the train will not be strengthened to any extent. Following it is the 9.54, a fairly fast suburban train. This is to be strengthened considerably, and will carry eome hundreds of Trentham-bound folk. The next train, the 1.20, is always a long one, but its arrival at the course at 2.30 makes it a rather late one for race-goers.
On-tho return journey tho 4.40 from Upper Hutt is to be considerably strengthened, and' this will be the only train available for return to the city on Wednesday and Thursday. On Saturday there will be more facilities available, as on tho regular time-table there aro the G. 25 from Upper Hutt and the 5.30 from Trentham, tho latter a special put on to cany visitors homo from the enmp. On the outward run, too, on that day there will be the 12.15 and 12.30 trains from Lambton, in addition to those already mentioned :is week-day trains. The suggestion, has been made that tho 3 o'clock train from Upper Hutt to Lambton shonld be held back for an hour on. Wednesday and Thursday, and tlyis provide an extra train for the use of racegoers. It is urged that this .train i' frequently late, owing to' delays en route from Woodville, and its delay for an Tiour on these race-days would not incouvonience the few passengers who are likely to be using it, -while it-would relieve a probablo serious crowding of tho ■one available train.
Roughly speaking, the accommodation to be provided will be sufficient for from 1000 to 1200 people on Wednesday and Thursday, and about 2000 on Saturday. The average daily race traffic from Lanibton is between 2000 and 3000 persons, so that, by present appearances, there will be ample-scope for the uso of motor-cars on the race days. .
