A Press Association telegram from Sydney states that Major-General \Y. Holmes, D.5.0., V.D., commander of /in Australian Division in Europe, was killed in, action on July 2.
At yesterday's session of the Anglican Synod the Yen. Archdeacon Innes-Jones gave,notice to move that the Synod congratulated His Lordship Bishop Sprott on the fact that his son Maurice has won tho Military •Cross.
The doath occun-red yesterday at Auckland of Mr. Walter John Clarke, formerly of the Ninth Reinforcements, from internal injuries sustained in rescuing a comrade who fell over, board from ft transport at Albany. An operation was performed in E«ypt, and Mr. Clarke returned to the Dominion, and had been under medical treatment since. Deceased's sou, who was 11! or 17 years of age, managed to get away with a reinforcement. He "was taken prisoner and died of wounds in Germany-Press Association.
The Timnru Presbytery lias sustained a call from the Kiirlio Presbyterian Church to the Rev. A. Q. W. Standnge, M.A., of Kelbiirn. Mr. C. T. Eraser, chief clerk in the head office of the New Zealand Labour Department, is at present laid aside by illness. The Rev. A. Wingfield, of Gore, has been appointed to the charge of the new St. Kilda Parish, at Dunedin.
Rifleman Ernest Orr, killed in. action on JiMO 7, and Lance-Oorporal Hemy William Orr, kille<l in action on June 8 wore two of the six soldier sons of Mr. f W Orr, of Kaitangiweka, Taumarun'ui liilleman Orr lefl Kew Zealand last vear. and had been on service m France and Helgiuin since liist September Lance-Corporal Crr left the Dominion' as a member of the- Rifle Brigade, and saw service in the fighting against the- Senussi in Western Egypt, and bineo then on the Western front. Ho took part in the Sommo battle last September when he was wounded in the neck. He' made a speedy recovery, and had been with his unit ever since. the other brothers on active service are: Private Norman Orr, who was awarded the Military Medal for services m the Somme battle; Rifleman A. L. Orr, reported wounded on June 8; Private Porey Orr and Trooper Lon. Orr, of the Australian Light Horse, now on activo service in Palestine.

Corporal William L. O'Connor, who has been awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous gallantry at the Battleof Messines, is the secdnd son of Mr. and Mrs. John O'Connor, of Barter Street, well-known residents of Wellington. Corporal O'Connor has seen considerable active service. lie served throughout the Samoa Expedition, and left New, Zealand with the Ninth Reinforcements on activo service.
Messrs. Alfred Henry de Toinettes (Wellington Suburbs) and Thomas Hans Gibson (Wellington East) have been appointed registrars of electors.
Mr. John Francis Downey ha*, been appointed an inspector of mines for the North Island.
Last night at SI. Patrick's Fall. Private Jeremiah.O'Brien, of G Company, Twenty-eighth Reinforcements, was tendered a social evening by St. Joseph'* Parish Federation and Education Committees and St. Patrick's branch of tin* Hibernian Socie'ty. The Kev. Father llurlev, S.M. Administrator;' presided. The Kev. Father Hurley, in presenting Private O'Brien with a wristlet watch on behalf of the clergy, federation, and Education Committees of St. Joseph's, paid a glowing tribute Jo his great work in the parish, and especially on the Federation and Education Committees., and assured him that they all hoped that he would soon return and again lake his place among them. Mr. J. P. M'Gowau, who succeeds Private O'Brien in tho Hibernian presidency, on behalf of tnar. body presented their past president witii a safety razor, and paid a glowing tribute to the excellent work Private O'Brien, accomplished for the society.
